Welcome to the
Department of Biological Sciences at Towson University! Our faculty
members and students examine a broad spectrum of questions regarding
living organisms and life processes. They study the physical and
chemical bases of life, how organisms and their component parts are
structured, how they function, how they interact with the environment,
and how they evolved. We work extensively with our students in the
classroom/laboratory teaching environment, in research laboratories, and
in the field. Many of our faculty are involved in active collaboration
with colleagues across the country and throughout the world. With the
diversity of our interests and the richness of our experiences within
the life sciences, we all agree that this is the most exciting time to
be a biologist in the history of mankind. The undergraduate biology curriculum at Towson University includes courses oriented toward majors in biology and related disciplines, pre-professional courses, and courses designed to serve as important elements in the liberal arts education of students with a variety of majors. The B.S. in Biology provides an exceptional foundation for students who plan to enter the workforce as biologists immediately following graduation or to study at the graduate/professional level. The biology major is designed to articulate smoothly with the backgrounds of secondary school graduates as well as transfer students from community colleges and other four-year institutions. The Department is especially proud of our emphasis on undergraduate research, which our faculty feel is an essential component of training undergraduates in modern biology. In addition to research opportunities offered by individual faculty members, the Department offers several federally funded opportunities, especially an NSF-sponsored Research Experience for Undergraduates program. As one colleague told us, "at our school, we just pay lip service to undergraduate research; at Towson, you actually do something about it!". For more information on undergraduate research opportunities and the Department return the homepage and browse the pages of our site. |
