CLASSES at TOWSON UNIVERSITY

POTTERS WHEEL & HAND BUILDING

 

Create ceramic art using the potter’s wheel or through hand building. Students learn wedging, centering and throwing on the potter’s wheel or coiling, pinching and slab construction with hand-built clay. This course also teaches glazing techniques to create one-of-a-kind ceramic objects and vessels. Best for beginners and intermediate students, includes firing fee.

INTRODUCTION TO MOSAIC

 

4 Saturdays
April 26 - May 17
1:30pm - 4:30pm

Location: Towson University, Center for the Arts

Tuition: $170 (basic materials for first day included)

Explore a variety of mosaic techniques incorporating glass, tile, mirror, buttons, shells, toys, beads, crockery and found objects. Local artist, Lori Goodman, inspires students to experiment with a wide range of possibilities to create 3 - 4 mosaic artworks during the six week course. Students may bring trays, tables or other furniture and objects to embellish with mosaic decoration. 

Basic materials are provided for the first class, students bring their own tiles and found objects for the remaining classes. supply list will be discussed in the first class).   Students provide their own safety goggles.

 

Instructor: Lori Goodman

Lori Goodman works in glass, ceramics and fibers. For the past several years she has been focusing on creating fused glass tiles and incorporating them into mosaics. A lot of the mosaics represent radial designs which can also be viewed as Mandalas and used as a visual for meditation.

PRINTMAKING WORKSHOPS

 

 

LINOLEUM CUT WORKSHOP

Introduces the bold quality of relief printmaking. Students may create greeting cards or other small images and print them by hand or through the use of a press.

MONOPRINT/MONOTYPE

Sunday, April 6

Monotype by Ursula Minervini

Introduces monoprint and monotype printmaking techniques. Through experimentation and exploration, students create a series of unique prints that may be painterly or graphic, colorful or monochromatic.

(Three Sunday workshops following each Printmaking Workshop)
Printmaking instructor available to guide students in independent exploration who have taken one or more of the previous printmaking workshops.

EXPLORATION OF WATERCOLOR AND MIXED MEDIA

This class is an exploration in integrating watercolor painting with mixed media: watercolor pencils, watercolor crayons, pastels, oil pastels and collage papers, to create unique artworks. Students are encouraged to bring a wide range of materials to explore the endless possibilities of creative expression.

Supplies to Bring: Watercolor paints, acrylic paints, Surfaces: Watercolor paper 140 lb. cold press, or rough yupo paper, gessoed surfaces (such as mat board), water container, board to hold paper, bull clips, paper towels, pastels, photos & sketches, other media you have.

Instructor: Carolyn Councell

Carolyn is a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art and has had experience in commercial art, teaching, and fine art. She is a member of several art associations, including the Baltimore Watercolor Society and the Annapolis Watercolor Club. She is also a member of The Art League in Alexandria, Virginia, Annapolis Art Alliance, and The Barrier Island Art Gallery in Sanibel, Florida. She has exhibited extensively in each of these venues as well as in other galleries in these regions.

Carolyn has received numerous awards: most recently "Peoples Choice" at the Annapolis Maritime Museum,; First Prize in the Baltimore Watercolor Society Anniversary show; Honorable Mention at the Annapolis Watercolor Club exhibit at Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis; First Prize at the Annapolis Watercolor Club exhibit at Maryland Hall in Annapolis. She has won Equal awards and Honorable Mention awards at The Art League in Alexandria, VA.

DRAWING BASICS

First 4 Weeks, February 6 - February 27: $140

Beginners learn to draw from observation using pencil, charcoal, and ink. Exercises in proportion, perspective, and shading are taught to expand skills. This course is recommended for students who would like to enroll in subsequent painting and figure drawing courses or refresh their drawing skills.

Supplies to be brought by Students: 14 x 18 or larger newsprint pad, drawing board. black marker, vine charcoal, pencil sharpener, 18” or larger ruler, pencils: 2H HB 2B 6B, kneaded eraser.

OIL PAINTING FROM OBSERVATION

Tuition: $140 each session

Beginning and intermediate students paint still-lifes from observation to develop the ability to render forms through color. The class introduces the techniques and materials of oil painting. Basic drawing skills are a prerequisite for all students, but intermediate students receive more challenging painting assignments. Class discussions include exposure to contemporary and traditional painters and their artwork.

Students supply materials*, preferably water based oil paints. *Beginner students: a supply list will be sent with the registration confirmation.

VANDERCOOK LETTERPRESS MAINTENANCE

Saturday, February 1
9:30am - 5:30pm

Location: Towson University, Center for the Arts

Tuition: $155

Materials to bring: students may bring photos, press manuals and parts from presses needing work

 

Participants will learn all the points of maintenance, cleaning and lubrication so as to be prepared for potential problems and make or direct repairs. We will also discuss all models of interest and other brands as warranted. Whether you use studio presses, own a press, or are thinking of buying one, this workshop will provide excellent direction for your future presswork. Bring your questions, photos and/or broken parts. Paul will also share examples from his collection of Vandercook literature. http://vandercookpress.info

Paul Moxon is a studio letterpress printer, itinerant teacher and author of Vandercook Presses: Maintenance, History and Resources. He is also website editor in chief for the American Printing History Association, a recent Newberry Fellow and a former Rare Books School Fellow.

CREATIVITY 101 WORKSHOP

Immerse yourself in a day of creative exploration with artist Gina Pierleoni. No prior art experience or ability is required to learn new methods to express your creativity. The workshop includes experimenting with a variety of materials and techniques to develop tools for bringing creativity to all areas of life.

Instructor: Gina Pierleoni

Ms. Pierleoni is a creative consultant for numerous organizations and teaches art with an emphasis on the creative process. She believes that, “creativity is one of the most powerful healing forces we have at our disposal, through the creative process we learn more about ourselves and how to trust our deepest impulses.” Come find your creative voice in this unique workshop.
