TOWSON, Md. (November 2009) - Veterans returning from deployment face many challenges as they begin to reintegrate back into civilian life. The need to effectively address their employment and educational needs will be addressed at the “Maryland National Guard Forums on Reintegration” to be held at TU on January 12 and 13, 2010. TU will host this important and timely event with $100,000 provided by the Maryland National Guard.

Under the management of Lonnie Mc New, senior vice president for Enrollment Management, and his staff, this forum aims to raise awareness of the issues returning veterans face and develop structures to assist them as they return to post-secondary education and the workplace. “Providing access to education and good services to the men and women who served is not only the right thing to do, it’s also the smart thing to do,” says McNew.

The conference will host teams of educators and employers from throughout the state.  “The Educators Forum on Veterans Issues,” scheduled for January 12, will feature sessions from the Maryland National Guard, national experts and authors, local universities and community colleges, veteran student panelists, and representatives from Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges, a consortium of national higher education organizations that support military service members returning to college.

The second conference, “Employer Summit: Recruitment and Reintegration of a Skilled Veteran Workforce,” scheduled for January 13, will feature sessions from the U.S. Departments of Veterans Affairs and Labor, the Maryland National Guard, and the Baltimore County Chamber of Commerce. Both events will take place in TU’s University Union.
