Cybersecurity Research Grant to Towson

November 2, 2011 (Towson, Md): Wei Yu, Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences, has succeeded in securing a considerable grant from the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), which will provide funding for his proposal titled A Distributed Host-Based Intrusion Detection Framework for Mission Critical Network Operation. This proposal is intended to address the demands placed on the military by the changing nature of modern warfare. The Department of Defense has recently developed the doctrine of network centric warfare, which endeavors to gain, using state-of-the-art information technology, a competitive advantage on the battlefield through the concentrated networking of geographically dispersed forces into a comprehensive, highly adaptive system of unprecedented operational efficiency. Wei Yu proposes to establish a foundation for detecting cyber-attackers who may hack into military networking systems and significantly disrupt combat operations. Managing cyber attacks would have considerable implications for the United States military in terms of maximizing effectiveness and minimizing losses sustained on the battlefield.

This project will also involve numerous TU students from both the undergraduate, master's, and doctoral programs. These students will have the opportunities to participate in Wei Yus research and play an active role in protecting the materials assets of our military and safeguarding the lives of participating combatants.

The current grant awarded to Wei Yu covers three years of research. Considering the vast number of existing and potential threats to national security, his research could prove to be of incalculable benefit. With his current funding and the indispensible contributions of his department colleagues, there can be no doubt that he will make great progress in enhancing the security of our armed forces in these uncertain times.
