Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)

The Towson University Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) ensures compliance with all regulations and ethical principles governing the use of animals in research.  See below to access application materials for the approval of the use of animals in research, and institutional policies.

Animal Subjects Training

Ongoing education and training in protection of animal subjects is a requirement for anyone engaged in research.

Towson University has partnered with The University of Miami's Collaborative IRB Training Initiative (CITI) to provide online training. The University of Miami's Collaborative IRB Training Initiative (CITI) provides a comprehensive selection of educational modules appropriate for the nature of research with which an investigator is engaged. The Office of Sponsored Programs and Research requires ALL individuals engaged in animal subjects research at Towson University to take the specific CITI Training.

Animal Subjects Research
  • Working with the IACUC
  • And the species specific course(s) (available courses)
    • Reducing Pain and Distress in Laboratory Mice and Rats
    • Aseptic surgery
    • Working with Rats in Research Settings
    • Working with Mice in Research Settings
    • Working with Amphibians in Research Settings
    • Working with Fish in Research Settings
    • Working with Zebrafish in Research Settings
    • Working with Cats in Research Settings
    • Working with Dogs in Research Settings
    • Working with Ferrets in Research Settings
    • Working with Gerbils in Research Settings
    • Working with Guinea Pigs in Research Settings
    • Working with Hamsters in Research Settings
    • Working with Non-Human Primates in Research Settings
    • Working with Rabbits in Research Settings
    • Working with Swine in Research Settings

Individuals are required to only take the modules most related to the type of research in which they are engaged.

The CITI training must be completed EVERY THREE YEARS in order to continue conducting animal research at Towson University.
