2012 O'Connell scholarship winners

The Department of Mass Communication and Communication Studies offers an impressive number of scholarships to qualified students. Some are general and recognize promising students, while others are more specific and recognize students who show an interest in a particular area of study.

The bulk of the scholarships are awarded during spring semester. Check here for specifics on what scholarships are available the beginning of each semester.

Scholarships available

The MCCS scholarship committee is offering nearly $30,000 to be awarded for the fall 2015 semester. The deadline for applying is Feb. 27 at 4 p.m.

Qualified undergraduates may apply for the following 10 scholarships:

• The Elizabeth Wainio Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund, two awards of $7000.00 each
• The Jamie Parker Memorial Scholarship Fund, two awards of $2,279.00 each
• The George F. Rogers, Jr. Scholarship Endowment Fund, two awards of $2,000.00 each
• The Steven and Laura Murfin MCCS Scholarship Fund, $289.00
• The Patrick John O’Connell Fund, $1,149.00
• The Chrystal Marie Clifford Memorial Scholarship, $1,242.00
• The Sam Lacy Sports Communication Scholarship, $527.00
• The Kathryn Dudek Memorial Scholarship, $683.00
• The J. Reg Murphy Scholarship, $665.00
• The Brian Billick Sports Communication Scholarship, $1000.00

Qualified graduate students are eligible to apply for the E. Magruder (Mac) and Helen M. Passano, Jr. Graduate Fellowship Endowment in Mass Communication. There will be two awards for $2363.50 each. The deadline to apply is Feb. 27 at 4 p.m.

Applying for a Scholarship

To apply for a scholarship, follow these directions:

  • Log on to Blackboard
  • Click on the Community tab
  • Search for Mass Communication
  • When the search result for MCCS Scholarship Committee appears, look directly to the left. You will see a pull down menu with a double arrow.
  • Pull down, and you'll see the option to enroll.
  • Enroll in the community and you will be able to access scholarship information and applications.
