Diversity Action Plan

Goal 1:   Develop and promote a respectful campus climate and provide services  that appreciate and celebrate differences.
  • Increase programming sensitive to the needs of diverse groups and strategically develop programs to broaden the experiences that include all students.
  • Enhance the connections and networking of all student groups and organizations with particular attention given to diverse groups.
  • Assess the on-campus climate related to the experience for faculty and staff of color and underrepresented groups.
  • Establish a link “commitment to diversity” or “diversity” on the home page of Towson University’s web site.  The link should include URL’s that provide links to the vision statement for diversity, educational/student development rationale and appropriate campus offices and resources.
  • Establish a Multicultural Center to provide centralized support for the many various diverse campus groups (students, faculty and staff).  This includes the appropriate staffing and resources to facilitate the connections of these groups.

  • Assess the on-campus climate related to the experience for students of color and underrepresented groups.
  • Assess the effectiveness of programs and services developed for majority students to enhance their appreciation and understanding of the value of diversity.
Goal 3:  Provide professional development activities that assist staff and faculty to understand their own and other cultures.
  • Include diversity training for faculty and staff during the first few weeks of employment, as well as part of ongoing faculty and staff development.
  • Provide educational briefings for faculty on framing content of courses through a diverse perspective (curriculum transformation, cooperative learning, learning acquisition skills valued by other cultures).
  • Include diversity component in the programming for future faculty and staff leadership groups.
Goal 4:  Enroll, retain and graduate culturally diverse students to support Towson University's mission as "Maryland's Metropolitan University."
  • Study the enrollment of Black, Hispanic, and other minority students from Maryland by county of origin, looking for opportunities for focused student recruiting to increase the representation of this group of students. Allocate/reallocate resources to recruit students from counties and states with diverse populations.
  • Add Spanish language option to telephone lines on campus (2000 extension). Explore the possibility of requiring at least one Admissions’ counselor to be able to speak Spanish fluently.
Goal 5:  Recruit, hire, and retain culturally diverse employees across all levels and areas of the University.
  • Search committees should develop a recruitment plan and strategies to address underutilization and ensure the establishment of a diverse and competitive applicant pool.  [JC (3), JS (48), DS]
  • Include in the recruitment packet Towson University’s vision statement for diversity and the name/s of appropriate individuals to contact for additional information.
  • Implement a training process that will ensure that ALL hiring managers and/or search committees have received appropriate training regarding Towson University’s commitment to diversity in connection with representation of staff.
  • Enhance existing mentoring programs for faculty to prepare a diverse pool of faculty for future promotional opportunities.
