Study Abroad Pre-departure Information for Parents and Guardians

TYPES OF STUDY ABROAD

There are two ways a student can study abroad:
  1. Exchanges
  2. Study Abroad Programs

Exchanges

An exchange is when a student spends a semester or full academic year at one of TU’s partner universities abroad. In return, a student from the overseas university will study at TU.

Students pay regular TU tuition and fees for exchanges.

Programs

A program is an organization or university which coordinates study abroad for students. A program often includes ‘extras’ such as assistance prior to departure, group flights, on-site orientations, resident directors, excursions, scholarships etc.

TU administers some study abroad programs. Others are run by other universities or independent companies or not-for-profit organizations. Programs run by other organizations are available to answer your questions. Feel free to call them with questions or concerns!

Students DO NOT pay regular TU tuition or fees on programs. Programs may cost more or less than TU tuition and fees depending on the destination and types of services included.

The Student Teaching program in New Zealand is administered by the Center for Professional Practice in the TU College of Education.

Students pay regular TU tuition and fees PLUS the Student Teaching Program fee.
