Portuguese Language and Culture in Brazil
May 27 - June 18, 2010
Spend three weeks learning Portuguese in Brazil in Summer 2010. This program will allow students to begin or enhance their Portuguese language skills and experience the local culture. Participants will take classes at a local faculdade. In addition, students will participate in a community service component providing a unique opportunity to observe and reflect upon the daily life of the local people first-hand.
Participants will also gain an appreciation for the unique customs and history of the region and the Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous contributions to Brazilian culture through visits and excursions. Highlights include visits to museums and other important sites including the Fortaleza Negra, an Indian reservation, and Redenção - the first city in Brazil to abolish slavery.
The program is based in Fortaleza in the state of Ceará
in the northeast of Brazil. The region is known for its traditions and geographic diversity and has historically been one of the most impoverished areas of Brazil. Fortaleza is the state's capital and home to over 3.3 million people. It is a cosmopolitan city with beautiful beaches and a thriving cultural center.
