CIEE International Faculty Development Seminars

Interested in adding an international dimension to your teaching or research? Consider participating in an International Faculty Development Seminar offered through CIEE: The Council on International Educational Exchange.

CIEE International Faculty Development Seminars (IFDS) offer faculty the opportunity to increase their international awareness, transform their campus and curricula, and expand their research and publication. The seminars are short-term, intensive, educational experiences designed to explore fascinations, challenge preconceptions, and open eyes to a wide variety of issues shaping the world today. Towson University faculty attending CIEE seminars in prior years have consistently praised the caliber, quality and value of their experience.

IFDS welcomes faculty and administrators from community college through university level. Participants do not need to be experts on the seminar topic or region.

Overview

  • One to two week seminars
  • Lectures given by local faculty or experts from prestigious public and private institutions
  • Lively discussions with overseas academics and colleagues
  • Co-curricular site visits to academic, economic, educational, environmental, historic, political, religious, and social institutions

Funding

The TU International Programs Office will fund up to two faculty members to attend a CIEE International Seminar abroad in Summer 2010. Preference will be given to faculty members who have not previously participated in a CIEE seminar. Part-time faculty may apply. Upon return, the faculty member is expected to document the experience in a written report, present seminar information to departmental colleagues, and incorporate the material into new or existing courses.

Application Process

Interested faculty should submit a letter of intent (approximately 250 words) explaining how the international perspective gained from the seminar will translate into benefits for curriculum design, classroom teaching, research, or study abroad opportunities. Send your letter of intent no later than January 15, 2010 to:

Dean Esslinger
Assistant to the Provost for International Programs
Email: desslinger@towson.edu
Tel: 410-704-2183
Fax: 410-704-3129

Candidates selected for the CIEE funding award from Towson University, must then apply to CIEE for admission to the seminar. Each applicant will be responsible for the $50 non-refundable application fee.
