Life in New Zealand as a Signer: Deaf People's Perspective

June 13 - 24, 2010

All aspects of the program including lectures and activities will be conducted or translated into American Sign Language.

Study abroad with TU Professor Jody Cripps in New Zealand in Summer 2010. This program provides an opportunity to experience what it is to be a signer and to be living in a society that recognizes signed language as an official language. Participants will gain an understanding of the global awareness of New Zealand Sign Language and the experience of deaf people living in the country. Students will examine New Zealand's novel concept for the widespread use of signed language and will compare and analyze the similarities and differences in various deaf-related disciplines between the United States and New Zealand.

Students will spend time in Auckland and Wellington. The course features guest lectures from deaf leaders in New Zealand and visits to local centers, schools, and societies including the Kelston Deaf Education Centre, the Deaf Association of New Zealand, Auckland Deaf Society, and the Office for Disability Issues.

Program highlights include visits to Rotorua, a Maori village, the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, a Lord of the Rings Tour, and a boat ride to Rangitoto Island. Housing is in university accommodation and/or hotels/hostels.
