Study Abroad

Urban Heritage in Islamic Spain and Morocco

May 23 - June 13, 2010*

Study in Spain and Morocco with Towson University in Summer 2010. This program will allow participants to explore Islamic history and culture through visits to key sites in both countries. Through visits to a variety of historical and religious sites, students will learn about the history that ties the two regions together and gain an appreciation for the role that they play in the modern state.

Students will spend time in Cordoba, Granada, and Seville in Spain and Fez, Marrakesh, the Ourika Valley, and Tangiers in Morocco. Program highlights include visits to the Alhambra Palace, Salobreña beach, Medina Azahara, Arab Baths, Sevilla Cathedral and La Giralda, Torre del oro, El Badi Palace, the Saadian Tombs, Agdal Garden, Tangier American Legation Institute for Moroccan Studies, Gibraltar, the Alcazar, and more.

Housing: Housing is in modest, clean hotels and a riad in Fez with students sharing rooms with one or more classmates.

Course: HIST 484 Urban Heritage in Islamic Spain and Morocco (3 credits). TU students may receive Honors credit for their study abroad experience - click here for more information.

*Students will also be required to attend sessions on the Towson University campus prior to departure - April 18, April 25, and May 9 from 5 -8 pm. Non-TU students may contact the faculty director to make alternative arrangements.

Costs:* $5,990 includes academic credit, health insurance, roundtrip airfare, local transportation, accommodation, daily breakfast and two group meals, and excursions. Additional costs include $150 study abroad fee, all other meals, and personal expenses.

*The Towson University Study Abroad Office reserves the right to make any necessary changes including adjustments in cost in the event that unforeseen circumstances arise.

Application deadline: MARCH 15, 2010. Admission is on a rolling basis. Early application is advised as space is limited.

Application Process : Students must hold a cumulative GPA of 2.5 and have a high school diploma or equivalent experience. Fill out an application (PDF) and submit it to the TU Study Abroad Office. $250 deposit required at time of application. Non-TU students must also submit a completed Non-Degree Enrollment Application (PDF).
