An aging population combined with an increasing birth rate means the demand for speech-language pathologists and audiologists should remain high for years to come. The department offers a pre-professional B.S. degree to prepare students for graduate study in either field. With a graduate degree, you can work in a wide variety of professional settings, including schools, hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation programs and private practice.

First-rate Faculty

More than 80 percent of undergraduate classes are taught by full-time faculty, who also have years of experience in the field. Your professors will encourage you to participate in research and clinical opportunities and provide direct supervision and guidance.  During the final year of study, many students participate in clinical practicum experiences with community members at Towson University’s Speech & Language Center or Hearing & Balance Center.

The Cohort Connection

Students move through the program in small cohort groups, which promote teamwork and cooperative learning. Small class sizes and classes with the same group of students ensure you get to know your peers, and you are guaranteed to get your classes in the major on a specific time schedule. You can view degree requirements and course descriptions in the Undergraduate Catalog. This is a screened major, admitting the top-ranking students each year, with approximately 70 students admitted per year. Interested students must apply for full admission. See the Degree Completion Plan to guide your progress through the major.

Why Towson University?

Consider a Double Major

With careful planning, students can complete both the speech-language pathology/ audiology major and other majors within four years. Students interested in the double major must complete the same screening procedures as students with a single major.  Talk to your adviser for more information.

Seek Certification

This undergraduate program provides the foundation you need to pursue graduate study leading to clinical certification and career opportunities as a speech language pathologist or audiologist. Clinical certification and state licensure in speech-language pathology requires the master’s degree.
