On The Cover
The Feb. 2 death of Calypso, the beloved 500-pound green sea turtle who charmed visitors
at her National Aquarium home for nearly 20 years, was big news in Baltimore. But
it was personal for aquarist Emily Anderson Kelly ’10, ’17, who hand-fed Calypso carrots
and Brussels sprouts.
“We’re all at a loss and utterly devastated,” she says. “She was my favorite animal to take care of.”
Staff photographer Lauren Castellana ’13 captured the cover image of Kelly and Calypso just three weeks before Calypso died. The University Photographers’ Association of America awarded the photo third place in February’s General Features and Illustrations category.
