Towson University is a nationally recognized leader in research and education. As we move forward into our next era, we strive to enhance this legacy and reach new heights as a destination for interdisciplinary discovery.

These efforts are already being recognized. Earlier this spring, TU received the prestigious Research Colleges and Universities designation by the Carnegie Commission. It is a testament to the highly consequential, highly impactful research our faculty, staff and students are conducting every day—work that is rooted in TU's commitment to the public good. I am confident that this recognition will be a prelude to our future designation as an R2 university with high research activity.

This is an important distinction for our university and one that I proudly celebrate, especially at a time when the value of research, and higher education more generally, is regularly questioned. While we continue to navigate the current challenging landscape, I hope you too are proud of this achievement and the meaningful work happening on our campus. It has never been more important.

Sincerely,

Mark R. Ginsberg, Ph.D.
President

Tracking Our Progress

Advancing TU as a comprehensive research and teaching university is one of my presidential priorities. Here are some recent steps we’ve taken in support of this goal:

  • increased overall research expenditures to $19.2 million in FY24, up 9% from FY23
  • began integrating AI education in our TSEM courses
  • added three new positions to the Office of Sponsored Programs and Research
  • created three endowed professorships in the last two years
  • enlisted 130 students to participate in a micro-credentialing in data analytics and cybersecurity through a USM pilot program
  • began building an enhanced FACET facility in Smith Hall, to open in fall 2027
