Below are sample interview questions for your field. In preparing for the interview, you’ll also want to review common interview questions (PDF) asked of all majors, thoroughly research the organization, dress professionally, and visit the interview skills section of the Career Center’s website. You can practice your interview skills online via Big Interview or schedule a mock interview with a Career Center staff member.

  • What experience do you have organizing a show? Setting up your work? Marketing for a show?
  • If you were awarded a $3,000 grant for a major art project, how would you use the money? (If you are interviewing for a grant be prepared to answer very detailed questions about every aspect of your budget)
  • What motivates/inspires your work? Be ready to discuss what inspired individual pieces? What inspires you as an artist? (Is your art connected to a certain time, era, culture, or something that happened in your life?)
  • Why is _____ your artistic medium of choice?
  • What sets your work apart from other artists? (Be able to compare and contrast yourself from other artists)
  • How would you describe your art?
  • What are you trying to do with your art/with this collection?
  • Why are you doing what you are doing?
  • What are you reading at the moment?
  • When and what was the last exhibition you saw? Tell us about it.
  • Whose work do you admire?
  • Where do you see yourself in 3 years from now?
  • Describe your level of skill and expertise with all the software programs you have experience.
  • What sets you apart from other designers?
  • What was the inspiration for each piece in your portfolio?
  • How would you work with a client whose taste you disagree?
