Biography

Katie Hearn has taught writing courses in the English department and the Instructional Leadership and Professional Development department (COE) at Towson University for 23 years.  Katie earned a M.S. in Professional Writing and a M.A. in Liberal Studies both from Towson University. She is also a Teacher-Consultant with the National Writing Project.

From 2001 to 2006, Katie taught undergraduate and graduate writing courses at Towson University, Notre Dame of Maryland University, and Stevenson University. In 2006, Katie became the co-director of the Maryland Writing Project at Towson University in the College of Education.  From 20012 -2014, Katie worked with teachers and students through the TU/BCPS RTTT Partnership in six Title I Baltimore County public schools where she created and coordinated professional development workshops and after-school writing programs.  Currently, Katie is using her previous experience in administration and in commercial real estate as she teaches business writing in the English department.

Katie’s interests in writing pedagogy and creative non-fiction essays have led to articles and presentations on teaching writing and essays on women and the out of doors. Katie’s essays have been published in the North Dakota Quarterly and the Baltimore Review where her series of three essays was nominated for a Pushcart Prize in 2005.  Currently, Katie has essays on her website, Seeking the Wild at katiebrendelhearn.com.
