Dr. Tosin Adebayo earned her Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2020. She also received her M.A. in Communication from Western Illinois University and a B.A. in English from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria.
As an intercultural and interracial communication scholar, she critically studies
Black women’s maternal healthcare experiences. Her research examines how cultural
discourses and differences impact the healthcare experiences of Black women. Presently,
she is investigating what types of discourses are evoked in African American women’s
interactions with healthcare providers during prenatal and postnatal visits. Her long-term
research agenda seeks to explore the role of racial and cultural identity and realities
in medical interactions, particularly for Black women and immigrant populations. Her
work has been published in the Journal of Family Communication, Journal of Intercultural Communication Research, Journal of Transcultural Nursing,
Health Communication, Communication Teacher, Journal of International Students, and
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration. For leisure, she likes
to sing classical hymns and bake with her girls.
