Biography
An avid performer, collaborator and educator, John Mangonon is a rising musical force in the tuba community. Mr. Mangonon serves as the adjunct instructor of tuba at Towson University, where he teaches private lessons and masterclasses, performs with the faculty brass quintet and directs the Tuba and Euphonium Ensemble. A renowned educator, he has taught guest masterclasses and lessons at several universities and grade schools nationwide. He also served as a music instructor at Cazadero Music Camp in Sonoma County, CA from 2016-2021; where he taught K-12 instrumentalists through his passion for music and joy for teaching.
A tubist in the United States Navy Band (Washington D.C.), Mr. Mangonon additionally has a wide variety of performance experience as both a soloist and a chamber musician. As member of the US Navy Band Tuba Euphonium Quartet, he has performed at the Army Band Tuba and Euphonium Workshop; additionally, he is an active performer in the U.S. Navy Band chamber series, performing and conducting in a variety of ensemble settings across the Washington region. He has received degrees in tuba performance, music education and wind conducting from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, and a Master’s degree in Tuba Performance at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. Mr. Mangonon's primary tuba mentors and teachers include Dr. Aaron Tindall, Mr. Dan Perantoni and Mr. Sérgio Carolino. Since winning his position in the United States Navy Band in 2021, and beginning his teaching at Towson University in 2023, Mr. Mangonon intends to use these platforms to continue pioneering works and commissions by underrepresented and diverse composers.
