The Applied Mathematics Laboratory (AML) is operated by the Department of Mathematics at Towson University and is currently directed by Dr. Angel Kumchev.
The AML, by agreement with sponsoring organizations, undertakes research projects of mathematical nature at the advanced undergraduate level whose analysis, solution and exposition will require the substantial involvement of a team of students and faculty members for (usually) an academic year. The sponsor submits a fee for the research project to Towson University to cover the costs of services, equipment, and faculty.
The AML forms a team of talented undergraduate and graduate students led by one or two faculty mentors, usually faculty from the Department of Mathematics with particular interest in the problem posed. This team studies the problem, and supplies an honest, intensive effort on the part of its best mathematical talent to study and fully report to the sponsor.
Students receive course credit for their participation in an AML project.
Past sponsors have included: Westinghouse Electrical Corporation, Citicorp, BlueCross BlueShield of Maryland, SAIC, the Baltimore City Fire Department, the Carroll Area Transit System, the National Institute of Justice, the Baltimore County Government, the Chemical Security Analysis Center (CSAC), and RTR Technologies. You may find the complete list, with short descriptions at our past projects page.
We invite corporations and government agencies with potential research projects to contact us.
