Towson University Basketball Hosts Huge Doubleheader

The Tiger men's team will take on Old Dominion while the women’s team will battle Coppin State at SECU Arena

The Towson Tigers basketball teams are ready to roar this weekend, with both the men’s and women’s teams playing at SECU Arena on Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader.

The doubleheader starts at 2 p.m. with the men’s team taking on Old Dominion.

The women’s team will follow with a matchup against local rival Coppin State, with tipoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

The Tigers men's basketball team is coming off a 99-37 win against local rival Goucher on Nov. 30. The team has also picked up wins this season over George Mason, Morgan State and Stony Brook.

The team came up just short on Nov. 20 at No. 24 Maryland after the Terrapins scored the final five points of the game to break a 66-66 deadlock and emerge victorious, 71-66. The Tigers also fell at Boston College last week.

Before the season began, Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) coaches voted the Tigers to finish second in the CAA. According to head coach Pat Skerry, the team has the talent to live up to early hype and success they’ve been seeing.

“I am very excited," Skerry told TowsonTigers.com. "We had a good summer and I really like the group and it's one that likes each other. This is the deepest group we've had and we have some guys who are proven commodities. They have to be consistent and that sets the tone."

Leading the team is junior guard Mike Morsell, who is averaging 19.7 points per game (ppg). Morsell has scored a team-high 22 points twice this season, and has been the Tigers’ leading scorer in four of the team’s first six games.

The team is also features senior forward Arnaud William Adala Moto, who was voted to the Colonial Athletic Association Preseason First Team. Moto has lived up to that billing, averaging 15.5 ppg along with eight rebounds per game.

Following its game against Old Dominion, the men will also be at home on Dec. 7 against Loyola and again on Dec. 10 against Fairleigh Dickinson.

After the men’s game this Saturday afternoon, the women’s team will look to continue their recent hot start against local rival Coppin State.

The women’s basketball team had its strongest start since the 2008-09 season by roaring to a 5-0 record. This streak included wins over George Mason, Cornell and UMBC. But the Tigers hot start ended at SECU Arena on Wednesday with a 75-59 loss against Georgetown.

The Tigers are led by senior Raven Bankston, who is averaging a team high 21.3 ppg. This includes scoring 30 or more points in two games this season. Bankston was also named to the All-CAA Preseason Second Team.

Sophomore guard Sianni Martin is also having a great season, averaging 14.7 ppg, which included a team-high 20 points in a win against George Mason.

After Saturday’s game against Old Dominion, the Tigers will travel to College Park to take on No. 5 Maryland on Tuesday, Dec. 6. The team will be back at SECU Arena on Sunday, Dec. 11 against Rider.
