Towson University has begun construction on a new field hockey complex on south campus, slated to be finished in fall 2018.

The two-phase plan will be financed by a combination of state funds, private gifts, and university funds. The field hockey field will be a water-based carpet style field. There will be three full fields and additional practice space on the south campus once the project completed.

The complex will be situated between the softball field and the tennis courts behind the Towson Center and allow for better playing conditions, higher efficiency for practices and increased capacity to host tournaments.

The Clark Companies will work on the fields project.

“These enhancements demonstrate in a highly visible way that Towson University is committed to our student-athletes and our community,” Athletics Director Timothy Leonard said. Our goal is to provide them with championship quality facilities. Once the fields are completed, this will also provide additional field capacity to serve the community. We also believe this increased capacity will be significant upgrade for the Special Olympics of Maryland, a critical partner of Towson University for the past 40-plus years.

This is the latest facility enhancement project for Towson, which aims to provide championship-quality facilities for its student-athletes and the community. Within the last five years, Towson has opened SECU Arena, a multi-purpose state-of-the-art facility, for its men's and women's basketball, gymnastics and its volleyball teams. In addition, SECU hosts concerts, programs, and serves as the home of the Baltimore Blast.
