For parents sending their children off to college, safety is usually the number one concern.
The National Council for Home Safety and Security included Towson University on its list of 2018’s Safest College Campuses in the U.S. TU is the only Maryland higher education institution ranked in the top 100.
“Safety starts with prevention,” said TU Chief of Police Bernie Gerst. “I applaud the members of the campus community who practice the techniques in our campus safety videos, sign up for emergency alerts and follow proven crime prevention methods to keep themselves—and our campus—safe. This accolade belongs to them, and to our TUPD officers who work diligently to prevent, investigate and solve crimes.”
The organization created this ranking using the most recent data from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting and the Campus Safety Security Survey put out by the U.S. Department of Education. Nearly all accredited institutions were considered in this project.
Each school’s safety score was calculated by analyzing crimes reported by universities. Also factoring into the safety score were violent and property crime rates for the cities in which the schools were located, and the number of law enforcement officers employed by the institution per 1,000 students.
