With the end of the academic year right around the corner, Towson University students will elect their next Student Government Association executive staff.

This year’s election starts at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, May 1 and lasts until 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 2. Voting is open to just undergraduate students, and can be done online at the Involved@TU website

There will also be voting at polling locations on campus, including Freedom Square, the University Union, Cook Library and other places. Those who vote in-person will have a chance to receive a free t-shirt.

Madeline Trainor ’22, a dual political science and international studies major from Frederick, Md., serves as head commissioner of the SGA Election Committee. After growing up with a deep fascination with politics, she jumped at the chance to join the election committee.

Trainor said she wanted to join the committee to continue to build voter confidence in the TU student body and show them that they have impact on what happens on campus.

“Voting is crucial as a student body because we are kind of entitled for our voices to be heard,” Trainor says. “We want students to know they have an impact, and that it’s crucial to be able to vote and have a say of what’s happening on our campus.”

The SGA executive committee is in charge of improving clubs on campus, improving rule changes for students, lobbying for students with administration, and focusing efforts on improving campus (examples include the West Village Bridge and the solar panels located on the University Union garage).

The SGA is also in charge of a $2 million budget from student fees that help with student organizations, sport clubs, intramural athletics, and the events put on by the Campus Activities Board — like the fall concert and Tigerfest.

There are two full party tickets running for the SGA’s Executive Board. The two groups are ReachTU and Ride4TU. The groups will participate in a debate starting at 8 p.m. Monday, April 29 at the Chesapeake Room 3 inside the University Union.
