TU searching for volunteers for historic Commencement ceremonies
First in-person Commencement in two years will be one to remember
May 5, 2021
Less than two weeks from the biggest Commencement celebration in Towson University history, the school is asking faculty, staff and alumni to volunteer and help make it unforgettable for graduates.
“Many volunteers are needed to ensure the ceremonies run smoothly and provide the best possible TU experience for all participants,” says Louise Miller, assistant vice president of university promotions and events. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to spend time outside the office with your colleagues from across campus while making a valuable contribution to a most special day for our graduates and their families.”
In-person, outdoor Commencement ceremonies for spring and winter 2020, as well as spring 2021 graduates, are scheduled from May 17–21 at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. each day at Johnny Unitas® Stadium. All ceremonies will be at 25% capacity, and masks will be required at all times for all participants. Other physical distancing and sanitation protocols will be strictly followed to ensure the health and safety of all guests and participants.
There are an estimated 300 volunteer shifts available, including greeting guests, distributing programs and helping with the student line-up. All volunteer roles are focused on ensuring the safety and comfort of our guests—many of whom may be visiting TU’s campus for the first time.
Barb Czajkowski, an administrative assistant in the Office of Development, has kept that in mind each of the last 20 years that she has volunteered at Commencement. She relishes each moment.
“I love the atmosphere on this day, be it in the robing room, arena or the stadium,” she says. “Everyone is so excited and happy. The amount of love spread around at these events is contagious. Volunteering at this event will make you so proud to be part of making these ceremonies so professional and beautiful for our graduating seniors, master's and doctoral candidates.”
Register to volunteer
If needed, volunteers are encouraged to obtain a supervisor’s approval before volunteering. Leave time is not required.
All volunteers will be entered into a raffle for prizes, receive a branded Commencement mask and a goodie bag as well as a lunch between ceremonies.
