The latest university rankings recognize Towson University as one of the best public research universities in the country. The Forbes America’s Top Colleges 2022 list, released Aug. 30, placed TU No. 75 among national public research universities, according to TU analysis of the rankings. TU ranked No. 95 among public colleges overall.

“To be named one of the top public universities by Forbes is a true reflection of our ever-growing momentum,” says President Kim Schatzel. “And we are especially proud to be recognized for our research efforts, which we strive to advance every day.”

The rankings reflect the university’s cross-disciplinary research programs as well as its recently updated mission statement acknowledging a greater emphasis on research and providing the authority to grant research doctoral degrees, paving the way in the ongoing pursuit to achieve an R2 (High Research Activity) Doctoral Carnegie Classification.

Forbes ranked the top 500 colleges and universities in the U.S. based on the return on investment and outcomes they deliver for their students. According to the publication, schools place well if their students graduate on time, secure high salaries and low debt and go on to have successful careers. Forbes did not release methodology for its research rankings.

Additional University System of Maryland intuitions in Forbes’ top 100 public colleges include University of Maryland, College Park and University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).

The rankings are the latest in a string of recognition for TU since the start of the fall term when the university welcomed nearly 5,000 new students, with more than 57% of first-year students identifying as an underrepresented racial or ethnic minority.

Earlier in September, TU received its third-straight Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT into Diversity magazine for its commitment to inclusive excellence.

Also this fall, the university was ranked one of the top 10 public universities in the North by U.S. News and was highlighted by Washington Monthly magazine as the best value university in Maryland in addition to being the nation’s 15th best “Master’s University” and among the best colleges for student voting.

TU was also recently named among the top 40 LGBTQ+ friendly universities by Campus Pride, the only institution from Maryland and D.C. on the list.

One of the best public universities in the country, Towson University ranks highly for research and inclusive excellence.
