Watch as President Kim Schatzel highlights the university’s goal of achieving an R2 Carnegie Classification for High Research Activity.
About TU’s efforts:
- Towson University has always adapted to fill the needs of Greater Baltimore as an anchor institution. The university’s place as a research institution and pursuit of an R2 designation is the latest progression in that evolution.
- To receive and maintain a Carnegie R2 status as a high research institution, TU must award at least 20 research doctorates and spend at least $5 million annually on research efforts.
- In the last fiscal year, the university invested $1 million in support of this goal, and in this current fiscal year an additional $2.5 million will be invested in staffing and research assistantships. Commitments are also in in place to fund an additional $11 million over the next three fiscal years in support of this institutional priority.
- With the support of the University System of Maryland Board of Regents, TU has expanded its mission towards a more expansive research and graduate agenda. This allows the university to develop new graduate degree programs – inclusive of research Ph.D. degrees – that will respond to the needs of a contemporary workforce and national research agendas.
