Whether it was as a volunteer or as chief of staff, as a donor or as interim director of athletics, Ted Zaleski did whatever was needed for Towson University.
Ted Zaleski, Jr. died Jan. 12. He was 88.
“We lost a beloved member of the TU community this past week. Ted was devoted to TU and its community for more than three decades, and I can confidently say we are all better for his caring and his leadership ,” President Kim Schatzel said. “My husband Trevor and I were very fortunate to count Ted as a dear friend. We will greatly miss him and are keeping his family and friends in our thoughts and prayers.”
His devotion to TU began more than 35 years ago, and continued until his passing. In his obituary, Zaleski’s family asked that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions could be made in his name to the Towson Tigers Athletic Fund.
“Ted was steadfast in his commitment to TU,” said Vice President for Advancement Brian DeFilippis. ”He was a regular presence at TU functions and events, and he was among our most consistent and generous donors. He leaves an indelible mark through his service and philanthropy.”
Zaleski had a long and distinguished career in the public and private sectors prior to joining TU in the 80s. He held appointed department head positions, serving with several county executives and administrations. Politically active, he held senior campaign positions and was active in the Maryland Association of Counties (MACO), serving on boards and as the president of the Administrators Affiliate twice.
“Ted was a powerhouse in regional politics and was the consummate champion for TU even before he worked there,” said Dr. Nancy Grasmick, Presidential Scholar, visionary behind the Dr. Nancy Grasmick Leadership Institute at TU, and co-chair of RISE, the Campaign for Towson University. “He personified the type of ethical leadership that our society so greatly needs today, and I know the entire region is keeping his family in our thoughts.”
Zaleski began teaching political science at TU in 1987. In 1995, he began leading the Leadership Institute, the year-long leadership program for TU faculty and staff that today is known as the President’s Inclusive Leadership Institute.
He served as Chief of Staff to the President beginning in 2003, after leading the transition team for President Robert Caret. In 2010, he was named by President Caret to serve as the interim director of athletics while a national search was held to name a replacement.

Zaleski retired in 2011, but continued to serve TU through his role on the Board of Visitors. He was also an ardent supporter of TU athletics, having funded a scholarship for female athletes.
He was a season ticket holder for football and basketball for years.
“A Towson Tiger to his core, Ted loved TU and welcomed our family to this community with a warm embrace, lots of texts messages and unwavering support,” said Director of Athletics Steve Eigenbrot. “Beyond his devoted presence at Tigers Athletics events, he set an example of service for all Tigers.”
A funeral mass will be held at St. Joseph Church in Cockeysville on Jan. 17 at 11 a.m.
