TU has many clubs for students looking to explore their unique interests and develop connections. Bit Brothers is one of the newest.

Founded by Maliya Baxter ’23 and led by club president Kojo Addo ’25, it is bringing diversity into the technology field by creating a place where men of color can empower and encourage one another through their tech journeys.

“It is all about creating a community,” Addo says. “Towson University is a great place to bond and create ideas. To have a club that serves underrepresented Black men in the tech field gives us a place for personal and professional growth.”

Bit Brothers offers resources for men of color to achieve their personal, professional and educational goals. “Our hope is that every member will grow,” Addo explains. “Whether that is helping students pursue a certain GPA, pursue a job or internship or gain knowledge within the field, we are a community that supports each other.”

“You are worth as much as your network. The more people you know, the more people you can learn from.”

In the fall semester, Bit Brothers extended their resources to middle and high schools across Harford County by creating an eight-week cybersecurity curriculum and teaching students over Zoom. “Teaching children is so important, and it was a great opportunity for us,” Addo says. “By helping children learn, we are also helping ourselves gain more knowledge.”

Over the spring semester, the club will provide public teaching resources, starting in April, for all students and professionals in technology through a two-day mini boot camp. “The boot camp is designed for success,” Addo says. “We will provide training in software such as Linux and mental health support and mentorship in all areas of professional development.”

Through the many educational and professional workshops Bit Brothers offers to members and the public, the club fosters collaboration.

With 80 members and nearing 300 followers on Instagram, the newly registered club is looking to expand throughout the community.

David Adeleye, Bit Brothers treasurer, says, “This club is more than our meetings every other Thursday. We've built a community of constant progression and support.”
