How a place of study became home
Dorian Andrews on his personal growth living in Japan
By CASEY BORDICK '18 '24 on March 5, 2024
Dorian Andrews ’18 started learning about Asian culture from a young age. After taking Chinese and Asian studies courses in high school, Andrews studied Japanese in the College of Liberal Arts at TU and participated in the Japanese Language and Culture Organization (JLCO)—a club that creates long-lasting connections through studying Japanese culture.
The connections made through JLCO introduced Andrews to the possibility of studying abroad.
He experienced Japanese culture firsthand when he participated in the TU Tokyo International University Exchange. During his semester abroad, Andrews studied alongside students from around the world, explored Tokyo nightlife, discovered new hobbies and shared meals with language exchange groups.
“It felt like paradise,” explains Andrews, “Every place I went to felt vibrant and fresh, and the easy access to see new places and try new things was amazing. Studying in Japan opened my eyes to a greater worldview—if I hadn’t studied abroad, I wouldn’t be living in Japan.”
Currently living in Yokohama, outside of the Tokyo Prefecture, Andrews teaches English online to children by way of games like Minecraft and Fortnite.
“Teaching kids is really fun,” he says. “The game helps the children be more interested and involved with learning, allowing them to pick up English really quickly.”
Andrews also works as a freelance interpreter for companies in the greater Yokohama community. After making music with peers, he is now producing music for Japanese artists and recording work of his own.
The TU international exchange program provided Andrews the opportunity to pursue his interests and develop professional goals. “Students should not think twice about studying abroad,” he explains, “The study abroad program prepares you for life after graduation….finding comfort in uncomfortable times.”
