Admission Requirements
Degree candidates intending to major in accounting are designated as pre-accounting until admitted into the major. Students are encouraged to communicate with their assigned faculty adviser each term to evaluate their progress in completing the requirements for admission.
In order to be admitted to the accounting major, students must meet the requirements for their designated catalog year.
Admission Requirements
Catalog Year 2016-2017 and Later
In order to be admitted to the accounting major, students must complete an application (PDF) and indicate that they satisfy all of the following admission requirements:
- Formal admission to Towson University as a degree candidate.
- Minimum GPA of 2.70 for the six CBE lower-level core courses: ACCT 201 (or 211), ACCT 202 (or 212), ECON 201 (or 203), ECON 202 (or 204), ECON 205 (or MATH 231 or MATH 233), LEGL 225. Grade equivalent of 2.0 or higher in each lower-level required course.
- Minimum Overall GPA of 2.30 for all coursework taken at Towson University.
- Minimum GPA of 2.70 for at least three of the upper-level accounting courses required for admission to the major:
- ACCT 301 Intermediate Accounting I
- ACCT 302 Intermediate Accounting II
- ACCT 341 Management Accounting I or ACCT 361 Tax Accounting I
Grade equivalent of 2.0 or higher in each upper-level accounting courses required for admission to the major. A minimum of two of these courses must be taken at Towson University.
No more than two courses required for admission to the major may be repeated. Of the two courses, no more than one course may be repeated twice.
Students who take an upper-level major-only accounting course before being admitted to the accounting major will be disenrolled from the course
Catalog Years 2011-2012 to 2015-2016
In order to be admitted to the accounting major, students must complete an application (PDF) and indicate that they satisfy all of the following admission requirements:
- Formal admission to TU as a degree candidate
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.70
- Grade equivalent of 2.0 or higher in each lower-level required course
- A passing score for the CBE Computer Proficiency Exam (70 percent or higher) or a grade equivalent of 2.0 or higher in EBTM 250.
- Completion of ECON 205 or MATH 231 (Statistics) with a grade equivalent of 2.00 or higher and one course in either anthropology, psychology, or sociology
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.70 for ALL upper-level accounting courses. To be admitted, students must take at least three upper-level accounting courses (minimum of 9 units). Two out of the three courses must be taken at Towson University. The specific upper-level course requirements are:ACCT 301 Intermediate Accounting I (3 units) – If this course was completed at another institution and has been accepted by Towson University, ACCT 302 – Intermediate Accounting II – must be one of the two remaining courses taken at Towson University.
- Two other upper level accounting courses (6 units) must be chosen from:
- ACCT 300 Accounting Information Systems
- ACCT 302 Intermediate Accounting II
- ACCT 341 Management Accounting I
- ACCT 442 Management Accounting II
- ACCT 361 Tax Accounting I
- ACCT 362 Tax Accounting II
No more than two courses required for admission to the major may be repeated, of which no more than one course may be repeated twice.
Students who take an upper-level major-only accounting course before being admitted to the accounting major will be disenrolled from the course.
