Information for Participants

Festival format and details about participating in and registering for the annual TU Jazz Festival. Registration will now open!

Thursday, January 16 and Friday, January 17, 2025

Festival Format

Band Directors should stop by the registration table to check in and pick up badges for all band members, two directors and four chaperones. Cases will be stored in the Recital Hall.

All registrants are welcome to gather in the concert hall for band performances. After storing cases, each registered performing group will warm up in CA 3069, move to the Harold J. Kaplan Concert Hall stage to perform up to three tunes, and then move to CA 3071 for their clinic. After the clinic, groups will return to the concert hall to watch remaining band performances.  

There are many area options near or on our campus.

All registrants will gather in the concert hall for an energizing, entertaining, and informational concert featuring our TU faculty.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION

  • Paid registration is valid for both days of the festival.
  • Registration and all fee payments must take place online.
  • Open the registration type below and select the link for the correct day to register.
  • On-site registration on the days of the festival will be available to individuals only. There will be no group registration available on-site on the days of the festival.

This package includes an approximately 15 minute performance of up to three tunes from your group, a hands-on clinic, attendance to all TUJF activities for all student group members, 2 directors, and 4 chaperones. Registration form must be completed and fees must be paid in full online in order to confirm registration.

(Due to time limitations, there will be no more than 6 performing groups on each day of the festival. If there are no performing group spots remaining, please register and attend as a non-performing group. Although performing groups will only be on the stage on assigned days, registrants may attend sessions and concerts on both days.)

A Note about Parent Attendance

This event is intended to be an educational experience for all involved. Morning performances are NOT INTENDED TO BE A CONCERT SETTING experience. Each group receives two director badges and four chaperone badges, additional persons wishing to attend the festival must register as an individual. The Towson University Jazz Festival is open to any and all interested parties who wish to register for the festival. We welcome everyone who would like to participate in this educational opportunity as registered participants.


PERFORMING GROUP INFORMATION

Your group will be assigned a performance time between 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Thursday or Friday. Groups will have up to 30 minutes to warm up in a room near the concert hall, up to 30 minutes to move to the concert hall and complete your performance, and up to 30 minutes to move to the clinic room and receive your clinic.

Groups will perform no more than 3 (three) tunes in the concert hall.

It is not necessary to provide scores for the clinicians during the concert hall performance.

You are also responsible for your own stage setup. You need to bring any extra equipment with you, including hi-hat clutch, cymbals, wires, cables and extension cords. Your time will not be extended for setup and breakdown purposes.

EQUIPMENT TOWSON UNIVERSITY WILL PROVIDE IN EACH OF THE 3 SPACES:

  • 1 Acoustic Piano
  • 1 Bass Amp
  • 1 Guitar Amp
  • 1 Vibraphone
  • 1 Full Drumset/stool (minus cymbals & hi-hat clutches)
  • Snare drum and stand, 2 toms (1 mounted, 1 floor), Bass drum, Bass drum pedal, Hi-hat stand (no cymbals, no clutch), 2 cymbal stands (no cymbals)

EQUIPMENT TOWSON UNIVERSITY WILL NOT PROVIDE:

  • Cords for guitarists and bassists
  • Hi-hat clutches
  • Electronic keyboards
  • Auxiliary percussion (congas, timbales, triangles, shakers, etc.)

GEAR YOU WILL NEED TO BRING:

Drummers - bring hi-hat clutch, sticks/brushes/mallets, and cymbals (ride, crash, hi-hat)
Percussionists – all required instruments (congas, timbales, triangles, shakers, etc.)
Pianists - do not bring anything
Guitarists - bring instrument and a cable to plug into the amp
Bassists - bring instrument and a cable to plug into the amp
