The Department of Music offers students a choice of three minors to hone their music skills and knowledge in tandem with a major in any other discipline.

What Can You Do with a Minor in Music?

The possibilities are as varied as your musical imagination. Aside from the joy and satisfaction of pursuing what you love, there is also a wide range of artistic opportunities that can prepare you for a more diverse array of possible career paths. The following list of potential career opportunities demonstrates how a minor in music might align with your career goals and strengthen your qualifications.

  • JournalismAlong with excellent writing, editorial and multimedia skills, having a rich understanding of music history and its cultural importance is indispensible in the field of music journalism.
  • Early and Childhood Education — Music has been shown to assist with language development, motor skills and emotional engagement; all valuable assets for an educator looking to keep students tuned in to learning.
  • Psychology —  Anyone with a gift for music would do well to consider it's supplemental therapeutic benefits — in stress reduction, anxiety reduction, developing cogent social skills — when considering a career in psychology or psychiatry.

Music Minor

The Minor in Music at Towson University offers a flexible 20-unit program that complements any major and allows students to tailor half of the coursework to their interests. Core requirements include lessons, an upper-level ensemble, music theory, and music history, while 10 units are open electives. Admission requires an application and performance audition, with faculty support available throughout the audition and course selection processes.

Minor in Music Industry

The Music Industry Minor is available to all students without requiring an audition. Students will explore a broad range of topics, including songwriting, copyright, management, and various aspects of music production and promotion. A faculty advisor helps with course registration, ensuring access to classes requiring department consent.

Minor in Music Technology

The Minor in Music Technology is a 20-unit program that provides flexibility for students to design half of their coursework. Core requirements include lessons, music technology courses, additional selected courses, and electives. Admission to this screened minor involves a portfolio review, interview, and departmental application, with faculty support available throughout the process.
