MD HIRES

The MD HIRES program is designed to help Biology faculty become more inclusive and effective mentors of undergraduate researchers and to help undergraduates engage in research beyond a course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE).

How Faculty Can Participate

Biology faculty may first participate in a professional development series for one year to learn about culturally aware mentoring, models for mentoring multiple undergraduates and assessment of mentoring effectiveness.

MD HIRES Faculty will receive support to mentor four undergraduates and a more advanced undergraduate researcher — serving as a Mentoring Research Associate (MRA) — for one semester.

Applications will be accepted in the spring to begin professional development the following fall.

How Undergraduates Can Participate

Undergraduates can participate in TU REP through several possible mechanisms.

  • MD HIRES Fellow: conduct research for one semester
  • MRA: mentor MD HIRES Fellows for one semester
  • Undergraduate Learning Assistant: assist in CUREs

All MD HIRES undergraduates will participate in student-focused professional development in a Community of Practice (CoP) for one semester. At least once a semester the MD HIRES community will come together as faculty, MRAs and novice researchers to engage in learning about mentoring.

In Fall 2024, applications will be available for students to participate in MD HIRES for Spring 2025.
