Graduate Assistantships

Campus Recreation provides a number of Graduate Assistantships in various areas throughout the department. While pursuing a graduate degree, students can work for Towson Campus Recreation and develop skills and competencies applicable to their future careers.

Campus Recreation, a department within the Division of Student Affairs, is dedicated to Towson University's mission of create opportunities that foster engagement and well-being for the TU community through diverse programs, services, facilities and employment. Located within Burdick Hall and the adjacent turf fields, Campus Recreation is an integral part of campus life for Towson students, faculty, and staff. Our dedicated team is comprised of 19 Professional Staff members and 9 Graduate Assistants.

Graduate Assistant Position Descriptions

The Graduate Assistant, Safety & Aquatics will assist with the development, implementation, and evaluation of Campus Recreation Aquatics programs. This GA will aid in coordinating and teaching ARC CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer-First Aid Certification Classes and will provide oversight, supervision, and direction to the aquatics program including student staff interviewing, orientating, supervising and evaluation as well as administrative processing of all courses. This GA will also provide event supervision as it relates to facility safety and access control, including monitoring and maintaining access and security systems, employee supervision, and risk management during various aquatics and safety events.  Other duties as assigned. Evening and weekend hours required as needed. This position reports to the Assistant Director, Safety & Aquatics. 

The Graduate Assistant, Competitive Sports will provide administrative and operational support to the Competitive Sports professional staff. Over the course of the two-year assistantship, the GA will benefit from two unique and immersive experiences, spending one full academic year with sport clubs and another with intramural sports. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, planning and facilitating training sessions, student staff supervision, risk management, program development, advising club officers, scheduling, providing onsite supervision of night and weekend programming and serving as a member of the Campus Recreation professional staff including attending weekly departmental staff meetings. Responsibilities may vary based on the evolving needs of the department and the skills of the applicant. Evening and weekend hours are required.This position reports to the Assistant Director, Competitive Sports and the Coordinator, Intramural Sports. 

The  Graduate Assistant, Facility Management  will assist with administrative support and supervision of the operations of Campus Recreation facilities. The position works within all facets of facility operations including management of the Welcome Desk, Facility Managers, Event staff, informal recreation, scheduling, student personnel, risk management and facility maintenance. These duties include, but are not limited to, maintaining records and reports, supervision of staff, maintenance, and  day to day  operations of the facility. Assisting with the recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling and development of the Welcome Desk staff and Facility Managers is a major part of this position. The Facilities Graduate Assistant Reports to the Assistant Director,  Facilities Management. Evening and weekend hours required as needed. 

The Graduate Assistant, Fitness serves as part of the fitness leadership team. The GA responsibilities will be focused on the administration and management of the fitness floor staff to include employee supervision, risk management, and programming. The GA will assist in supervising fitness floor attendants, managing communication tools (I.e., SubItUp, Connect2, GroupMe), tracking equipment and supply inventory, troubleshooting equipment issues, programmatic assessment, and assisting with the hiring, onboarding, and training of staff. Based on experience and interest, the incumbent may obtain experience in personal training and group fitness programs.

The Graduate Assistant, Marketing will work directly with the Assistant Director, Marketing Strategy & Engagement to develop and enhance marketing and communication efforts for the Department of Campus Recreation. Working closely with the student employee marketing staff, the Graduate Assistant will assist in a variety of marketing initiatives including print, digital, in-person, social media, and video creation. Ability to work summers and winter breaks is desired, as marketing materials are prepped for the upcoming semester. Evening and weekend hours required as needed.

The Graduate Assistant, Membership and Guest Services will assist with operational support and supervision of Membership, Guest, and Equipment Room Services. Primary responsibilities will consist of assisting with student employee supervision, risk management, business practices, Fusion recreation software management, and equipment check out. The Graduate Assistant will work closely with members and guests to resolve customer service and conflict resolution issues. As a member of the Campus Recreation department, the Graduate Assistant, Membership & Guest Services will hold additional responsibilities that serve the greater needs of the department. This position reports to the Assistant Director, Membership & Guest Services. Evening and weekend hours are required as needed.

The Graduate Assistant, Outdoor Adventures will assist with the operational and administrative support and supervision of the Outdoor Adventures program. Primary responsibilities include hiring, training, mentoring, and evaluating student, volunteer trip leaders. Based on experience and interest, the graduate assistant may obtain experience in the risk management and facility operations of the Outdoor Adventure Center, supervision of the Gear Rental program and managing the gear storage facility, and leading teambuilding programs. This position requires multiple field-instruction days per month leading activity-specific trainings, open-enrollment trips, and custom trips. 

Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director – Employee Experience for Campus Recreation, the Graduate Assistant – Student Personnel will assist with student employee human resource activities including recruitment, hiring, on- and off-boarding, departmental training and development, and recognition and appreciation programs and events.  The Graduate Assistant plays a pivotal role in providing consistency and quality of experience for over 200 part-time student employees in the department.

Qualifications

Education

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university an successful admittance to a Towson University graduate program. Academic programs with a significant clinical/teaching requirement that would significantly limit assistantship availability may not be considered.

Experience

Previous experience working in Campus Recreation, specifically in a leadership role for the respective program area application is preferred but not required.

Benefits of Graduate Assistantships

Stipend

  • $12,000 annually for duration of the two-year assistantship

Tuition

  • Full time (20 hours/week) graduate assistants are eligible to receive a tuition waiver for 6 to 12 credit hours per semester.
