Regional & National Fellowships

The Office of Civic Engagement and Social Responsibility supports students in applying for the following competitive regional and national fellowships.  

Andrew Goodman Puffin Democracy Fellowship 

The Andrew Goodman Puffin Democracy Fellowship provides students with the opportunity to advocate for student voting accessibility with the goal of increasing the student voting rate.

Fellows receive training, a $500 stipend per term, and access to a large support network. Fellows work in partnership with the Office of Civic Engagement and Social Responsibility and the TU Votes Coalition.  

The Selection Committee is comprised of representatives from the Office of Civic Engagement and Social Responsibility. Applicants can be undergraduate or graduate students and must have at least one year of their education remaining at the date of nomination.

Campus Compact Newman Civic Fellowship 

Each year, Towson University (TU) has the opportunity to nominate one student for the Campus Compact Newman Civic Fellowship. The fellowship recognizes students who: 

  • engage in collaborative action with others from campus or from surrounding communities in order to create long-term social change
  • take action in addressing issues of inequality and political polarization 
  • demonstrate the motivation and potential for effective long-term civic engagement 

Students must be nominated by TU faculty or staff before being invited to submit an application to the Nominee Selection Committee. The committee is comprised of representatives from BTU, the Office of Civic Engagement and Social Responsibility, and the Student Government Association. Applicants can be undergraduate or graduate students and must have at least one year of their education remaining at the date of nomination. The nomination form will be available here in December.  

Imagining America (IA) Joy of Giving Something Fellowship

The Joy of Giving Something (JGS) Fellowship elevates photography and digital media as pathways for undergraduate students to pursue their careers and to make a difference in their communities.  

Fellows receive: 

  • $2,000 tuition scholarship
  • mentorship and financial support for a community project
  • invitation to participate in virtual learning exchanges
  • travel award and complimentary registration to attend IA’s National Gathering

Imagining America (IA) Publicly Active Graduate Education (PAGE) Fellowship 

The PAGE Fellowship is IA’s network for publicly engaged graduate students in humanities, arts and design. It enhances the praxis and pedagogy of public scholarship; fosters a national, interdisciplinary community of peers and veteran scholars; and creates opportunities for collaborative knowledge production. The PAGE consortium, made up of alumni and allies of the program, promotes opportunities for mentorship and peer support from IA’s network.

Transform Mid-Atlantic (TMA) Civic Fellowship 

Each year, Towson University has the opportunity to nominate one student for the TMA Civic Fellowship. The fellowship recognizes students who have made outstanding academic and co-curricular contributions to creating a campus and community culture of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion through their research, engagement and leadership. 

Students must be nominated by TU faculty or staff before being invited to submit an application to the Nominee Selection Committee. The Committee is comprised of representatives from BTU, the Office of Civic Engagement and Social Responsibility and the Student Government Association. Applicants can be undergraduate or graduate students and must have at least one year of their education remaining at the date of nomination. The nomination form will be available here in January. 

University System of Maryland (USM) Langenberg Legacy Fellowship 

Each year, Towson University has the opportunity to nominate one student for the USM Langenberg Legacy Fellowship. The fellowship is a grant program designed to fund student-led projects focused on civic education and/or civic engagement. It offers students the opportunity to launch projects, enabling them to bring together their unique vision related to four civic engagement imperatives: news literacy, inequality, climate justice, and engagement with the democratic process.  

The Nominee Selection Committee is comprised of representatives from the Office of Civic Engagement and Social Responsibility and the Student Government Association. Applicants can be undergraduate or graduate students and must have at least one year of their education remaining at the date of nomination. Applicants require a faculty or staff sponsor. 

Fellows receive:  

  • $1,000 stipend at the beginning of the project
  • $500 at the end of the project 
  • invitation to participate in Langenberg Legacy community building events (e.g., webinars, recognition events, meet and greet) 

The faculty or staff sponsors receive:  

  • $500 at the end of the project
  • invitation to participate in Langenberg Legacy community building events (e.g., webinars, recognition events, meet and greet)
